After gorging ourselves on all the major food groups for the past few days it’s time to put down our knives and forks and start to work it all off. I can guarantee, as our kids return to the classrooms after a good respite, teachers will be eager to have their students back! And as they welcome their students’ return they will also be making time for the playground, the gym and eagerly awaiting Physical Education classes and for sports team practices to start-up.
As both a teacher and principal, I actually experienced and witnessed the benefits of kids exercising. First the social component, next the benefit of inquiry learning, and finally crucial at every age – aerobic exercise. Why is it so key for all ages of students to get moving? It reminded me of a fascinating article I read in The New York Times, The Fittest Brains: How Exercising Affects Kids’ Intelligence by Gretchen Reynolds. Please see link to the article below.
So as we pack those turkey leftovers for lunch, let’s also try to keep our kids grooving and moving. It will help their disposition and might make studying for an exam or completing that homework assignment a whole lot easier! Off to chase the dogs and try to keep the brain power active.
