I am a huge believer and supporter of trying to “pay it forward.” It can be a small gesture of thoughtfulness or possibly taking it to the next step where you try to live each day with gratitude and a generous spirit. I have seen multitudes of teachers create a learning moment to help teach their students the value of thinking first. Trust me during the course of a school day there are plenty of opportunities to illustrate thoughtfulness and/or gestures of kindness whether in the classroom, on the playground or on the athletic fields.
From the Calm app, which you know has to be good for some tidbits of wisdom, I discovered this one:
“Before you speak, let your words pass through three gates?”
Is it true?
Is it necessary?
Is it kind?
What a good, easy measuring stick to help students think about what they say before speaking! I truly believe to build thoughtful habits in our kids it takes intentional teaching and lots of real-time practice.
These “three gates” could definitely help each of us! I know personally I like to picture these gates before speaking.
Have a great week!
