During the holidays it is incredibly easy to get caught up in the hectic rush of parties and presents and lose sight of what should be one of our guiding principles – gratitude. If we forget that as adults, can you imagine how easily kids lose sight of being appreciative given all of the hoopla? I suggest we take this time of year, whether you celebrate or don’t, and purposefully reach out and demonstrate an abundance of gratitude and love.
Both in school and at home let’s try to take the time to be role models and help children practice the art of thanks and appreciation. Sure a gift is nice, but that gift can be simple and still mean the most. To this day I have cards that students and my own children have made for me that I truly treasure. Like every other skill we should teach students to remember and practice and express sincere gratitude. It is essential and we should do it by way of example. I hope every student recognizes how good they feel when they receive positive feedback and recognition for their hard work. In turn they need to make sure that they too thank those who help them and care for them each and everyday. Maybe take a moment to ask your kids who they think they should acknowledge and thank? It will be interesting to listen closely and know who they think that is, what value they add and why.
No bow is needed to give your school crossing guard a hot chocolate. No bow is needed to make cookies for the maintenance staff. No bow is needed to write your teacher a special note of thanks. No bow is needed to hug a principal (I had to get that in there!).
I hope all of us during this joyous time of year will remember the secret sauce is gratitude. I know I am going to make sure to acknowledge and tell family and friends how much I care during this holiday season. Hopefully demonstrating gratitude becomes an instinct and a positive path that all of us, including our children, will take. To celebrate the gift of good spirit and thanks can be our collective goal. I wish peace and goodwill to all and a grateful thanks for reading my blog!
Cheers to 2018!
